Dearest Tribe Members,

I will never forget the day in March of 2011 when I met “Julie”, the patient that changed the way I treated patients with mental illness. My nurse “Stephanie” asked me to see her 17 year old cousin as a last ditch effort before she was admitted into a long term psychiatric facility.

“She is diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. She has attempted suicide more times than we can count since the age of four years old and she has been cutting herself for about as long as well. She hears voices and nothing that they have done in the psychiatric institutions have helped.”

I responded, “ Stephanie, I am sorry, but she sounds extremely complicated and this is out of my wheelhouse.”

“Please, please, Dr. Madej, please see her. I don’t think taking her out of high school and putting her in an institution will help her. I think it’s going to ruin her life. We’ve tried everything else, please help her. Just try.”

“Stephanie, I am an integrative internal medicine physician. It sounds like she needs psychiatry.”

“I’ve seen you help people get off medications and you’ve taught me how infections can cause mental illness. And I’ve seen how the vitamin IVs can help people immediately with anxiety. I think these things can help her.”

I continued to refuse seeing her cousin. I walked away as many thoughts went through my head. How could I help someone who has been cutting herself and attempted suicide since the age off our years old? Even if I could help her, could she really recover completely? Wouldn’t I be blamed if her behavior continued? Why should I take on this liability?

And then, I heard that still, small voice. “See her. Help her.” I stopped walking and took a deep breath. When the Holy Spirit gives me a message, I stop and drop everything. I had goosebumps go through my body and a knowing filled my soul. I needed to see her.

I turned around and walked back to my nurse. “OK Stephanie. I will see her one time but I cannot promise anything. I will do my best to help her physical body get as healthy as possible and do a little detective work.”

I was doubtful that I could help much as I said these words to my nurse. But Stephanie had been such a good and loyal nurse through the years by my side, the least I could do was see her cousin.

The next day Julie came to see me with her mother. As I walked into the exam room, I saw a thin teenage girl sitting on the exam table with her head down looking at the floor. Her hands were clenched on the edge of table, and she was obviously nervous.

I extended out my hand for a handshake and said “Hello Julie. I’m so happy that you came to see me. Your cousin told me a little bit about you, but I would like to hear more from you. I’m a different kind of doctor, and I believe that our bodies can heal of anything. Everyone who comes in here can get better if they try the things that I suggest. I cannot promise anyone gets cured; that is between you and God. But if you try 100%, I will try 100%. I know you have been through terrible things in the medical system, and I am sorry. I’m sure you have little faith in this system. Just know that I will hold the faith for you if you put in the effort.”

Julie looked up at me through tearful eyes. “Ok.”

Julie began to tell me her story. She spoke calmly and clearly, and I could tell she was a bright young woman. She told me how she had bouts of depression that were so terrible since the age of four. She heard voices telling her that the only way out was to kill herself. They drove her literally insane. She began cutting herself around the same time just to see if she could feel alive.

“When I was in elementary school, I was admitted to the psych units. They put me in isolation and sometimes in a straight jacket by myself. I’ve been given shots of medicines and shock treatment. Nothing has worked, and nobody believes me that I’m not crazy. I’m not crazy.” She looked at me with a tearful pleading eyes.

I stopped her story, and I grabbed her hands in mine and said, “No, you are not crazy. And I am so sorry that our medical system did this to you. I am so sorry.” Tears welled up in my eyes as I

imagined what she went through as a little girl. After seeing so many patients over the years, I just “knew” or had a gut feeling, those patients that had organic physical problems and those that had something purely mental. Julie had some imbalances in her physical body, I just knew it. This is part of the art of medicine, something that AI can never replace.

“Please trust me and try to do some vitamin IVs. Please allow me to draw blood to check for vitamin imbalances and hidden infections in your body.”

Her mother was exasperated, and I could tell that she was in mental anguish herself. “You don’t know what I have been through with her. How many times have I thought that I would lose her, I can’t bear to see her die. She needs more help. “

“ I understand what you are saying. I know what I am saying is different than what you’ve heard before. Just try something different for two weeks. I am not treating her mental illnesses- she is to continue with her psychiatrists and medications. I am here to identify blockages in her body that are preventing her from being well. You would be surprised at how quickly the body heals once a blockage is removed. They can be physical, mental, or spiritual.”

They both agreed and I began to examine Julie. By my physical examination, I knew that she had at least two to three different infections in her body, as well as a poorly functioning digestive tract. She had enlarged lymph nodes in the posterior cervical chain indicating M Pneumoniae, enlarged salivary glands and a white tongue indicating candida, a sallow color around her eyes indicating Lyme disease. By her skin and nails I could tell she was not assimilating her vitamins and minerals. Increased heat in her mid epigastric area that radiated to the back was indicative of H pylori.

I had the lab in my office draw bloodwork for tick illnesses, mycoplasma pneumoniae, H pylori, various vitamins and minerals, hormones, a blood count, metabolic panel, urinalysis, and thyroid panel. She had a vitamin IV in the office and immediately began to feel better. I quietly prayed as I re-examined her body. I prayed to God that He would heal her and He would guide me helping her.

I gave her instructions on changing her diet, watching what she read or saw on television, detox baths, and walking outside for 20 minutes a day.

She returned in one week to go over her blood work. Her results were just as I expected them to be based on her physical exam. She had Lyme disease, mycoplasma pneumoniae, and H pylori. She had low progesterone, low magnesium, low B12, and low vitamin C. I explained to Julie and her mother how each one of these abnormal levels can contribute to mental illness.

Julie had another vitamin IV in the office this time adjusted to account for her abnormal levels in the blood work. She received IV antibiotics as well. She was sent home on appropriate antibiotics, natural progesterone at bedtime, baking soda, magnesium, and B complex shots with amino acids. She was counseled in healthy lifestyle changes including sleep hygiene. And I continued to pray.

Julie followed up in two more weeks and what a change in her! She was sitting up smiling on the exam table and looked me in the eyes. She had fewer auditory hallucinations and no feelings of suicidal ideations. No more urges to cut herself. Her appetite improved and she was sleeping better at night. She and her mother felt she was ready to go back to school. One month later, she came back to visit as a follow up. She was now playing softball and enjoying high school. She continued to do well and had no recurrences. She was weaning down on her medications as well. We repeated her blood work to ensure that the infections were gone, and that her vitamin levels improved and were stable.

Julie came back to visit me as she began to start community college. She was a confident, lovely and bright young woman. I couldn’t help but have tears of joy when I saw her. These are the patients that make it all worth it. The sacrifices seem minuscule in comparison to watching this young woman have a chance for a good life.

Thank God that I listened to that still small voice, the Holy Spirit, in March of 2011. He used me as His vessel to work through, and I was obedient to His calling. I am not perfect at following through with what the Holy Spirit nudges me to do all the time, but I work towards being a better steward of His Will every day.

"The Lord said, Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.' Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah” – 1 Kings19:11-13

My Beloved, listen to the Holy Spirit and He will use you to do His great and mighty things! We all can be earth angels to one another. And remember that when this fallen world tries to write you out of its story, Heaven can write you back in. What the world gives up on or does not think is worthy, our Father in Heaven restores to its Glory. What a Great Father we have in Heaven!

With the Greatest of Love and Many Blessings,

Carrie Madej
